Growl

It was a truth universally acknowledged that a woman, who previously declared herself a vegan, and then proceeded to eat raw hamburger with her bare hands, must be pregnant. Most likely with a werewolf’s baby.

What to do, what to do.

James offered to pick me up, which I appreciated, but I couldn’t look at my father on my way out. How was I going to tell him? The news that Becky was pregnant was bad enough. The news that not only was it not his, but that it was also a supernatural baby…how on earth was Big Kyle supposed to process any of that?

The afternoon light was becoming weak already, twilight quickly approaching. I wrapped my jacket around me and climbed into the cab. As I did, I spotted Edgar the crow sitting on a low branch facing Becky’s house. He cawed at me and I waved, unsure of whether he knew that meant hi.

James was all over me once I was next to him. “What happened? Are you okay? Did anyone else see anything?”

“Um…can we drive away, first? I’d like to put some space between me and Becky.” The truth was, I wasn’t exactly comfortable leaving her alone with Kyle and Amelia. She seemed more unstable than ever. But I had to get away for at least a little while. When Becky was agitated like that, it was best to stay out of her sight.

“Edgar’s keeping an eye out, and Luke and Eden are on their way down,” James said.

“Good. But can we just go down to the boathouse?” I asked. “That way you can bring me back quick if you need to.”

James drove in stony silence, concern etched deep into his handsome face.

I paused before we went inside, staring up at the night sky. The stars were already visible, icy and diamond-like, in the darkening sky. I’d never seen so many stars until I came to MDI. The early night sky was incredible, dazzling.

“What’re you thinking?” James put his arm around my waist.

“Just how beautiful it is.” I swallowed hard. “How mysterious.”

He nodded. “It’s both of those things for sure. But let’s get inside—I need to know what happened.”

I took a deep breath as we went into the boathouse. We passed the Mia, James’s enormous sailboat that we’d never managed to take out. “Can we sail on that next summer?” I motioned to its glorious white hull. “Seems like a waste that it just sits here.”

“I promise we’ll take it out. We can sail it all summer if you want.”

I exhaled shakily, nodding. Thinking forward to normal, fun events in the future made me feel optimistic…like I might actually have a future.

James turned on some of the lights, including the strand of Christmas lights in the kitchen, and we sat down on the couch. I clutched one of the throw pillows and looked out at the ocean. A smattering of winking lights shone from the islands beyond; at night you could really tell how uninhabited Acadia became in the off-season.
